PRIMA FACIE ——
2027-1-16
——Suzie Miller 《Prima Facie
Prima Facie,
"To me, this is not about emotions; it is a game of law." — Suzie Miller, Prima Facie
Prima facie is a legal term meaning "evidence that appears sufficient on first examination." Yet within structures of power, how much of the trauma of sexual violence can truly be transformed into visible, admissible evidence?
The #MeToo movement has enabled survivors to speak out, but it has also triggered legal machinery that proves difficult to halt. Whistleblowers often find themselves counter-sued for defamation, forced into prolonged legal battles. The pursuit of justice can shift into an exhausting contest over memory, interpretation, and the burden of proof.
This exhibition is divided into two spaces.
In the first, the artist collaborates with the Judicial Reform Foundation to conduct in-depth interviews with lawyers who handle sexual-violence cases. An interactive chatbot built from these interviews allows visitors to speak directly with these lawyers — entering the complex terrain where legal practitioners attempt to navigate the impossible distance between traumatic testimony and evidentiary standards.
The second space is conceived as a feminist combat arena, where the exhibition moves beyond the language of the law. Here, subjective experience is allowed to exist. Visitors can participate in martial-arts sessions, explore personal boundaries, and speak about what their bodies have endured. Outside the courtroom, this space opens another language — one of expression, resistance, and reclamation.
"I once believed that if trauma could be translated into legal consequences, the pain would finally end."
This exhibition attempts to hold multiple truths at once: the truth of the legal system, the truth of the body, and everything that lies in between — truths the court cannot accept, yet the body cannot forget.
